Mackenzie Architecture is an intentionally small firm providing a full range of architectural and planning services to clients in the Pacific Northwest. Our focus has always been to serve single-family residential clients. We have also designed many award-winning commercial and multi-family residential projects. Since our founding in 1984, we have completed more than one thousand built projects, ranging from small alterations to large new houses and buildings, with construction budgets ranging from a few thousand to over a million dollars. Many of our projects have been published regionally and nationally. We enjoy working on projects of all sizes, types and budgets.
THE ARCHITECT
Hilary Mackenzie, Principal, has been designing spaces for clients since 1981. She began her internship that year with noted Portland architect, Richard Sundeleaf. Prior to that she received her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Smith College, and her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington.
In her twenty-four years of practice, she has designed thousands of residential spaces. The firm has no set “style”. Each project is a unique response to the client’s needs, the budget, and the setting. All projects are designed to utilize the best available building systems. It is important that every building be as beautiful and useful in the future as it is in the present.
Services we provide include:
--Evaluation of land or structures prior to purchase
--Zoning and building code consultation
--Assisting clients in defining needs and budgets
--Developing schematic design options
--Preparing construction documents
--Assisting in selection of contractors
--Obtaining permits
--Construction administration
--Assisting clients with selecting fixtures and finishes
We tailor our work to best suit each client's needs and budget. Some clients request our involvement in every aspect of their projects; others need only limited architectural services. Our goal is to help make every project the best it can be for our clients.
THE ARCHITECT AND CEMENTITIOUS ICF'S
For the past several years, Mackenzie Architecture has been encouraging clients to build the most energy efficient structure they can afford. Performwall ICF and Rastra have been the best solution for our climate and Apex is the next generation of these products. It is mold, mildew, and rot resistant. It has a four-hour fire rating, and exceptional seismic strength. The walls provide a breathable shell with an R-52 insulation factor. This shell coupled with a hydronic radiant heating system can significantly reduce the energy use of any home.
